The end is in sight for youngsters taking part in Beat the Street East Kilbride – the giant active travel game taking place across the town.

The game ends on Wednesday, October 30 and until then, every Beat Box in the game will be giving out double points to mark the initiative’s Go Celebrate week. At 7pm on the last day, the leaderboards will be taken down.

Nearly 13,000 people have signed up and have together walked, cycled, wheeled, run and scooted more than 100,000 miles so far in the competition – that’s more than four times around the equator or nearly halfway to the moon!

Currently, St Kenneth’s Primary School leads the total points leaderboard with Crosshouse Primary School in second place and Our Lady of Lourdes in third place.

On the average points leaderboard, EKCC Juniors is top, with 2nd /7th EK BB in second place and Greenburn Primary School in third place.

Beat the Street helps make walking, wheeling and cycling become the most popular choice for all shorter everyday journeys for adults and children.

This results in improved mental and physical health; increased levels of physical activity; improved air quality and less congestion.

Beat the Street’s focus on getting people moving through active travel provides much wider benefits including wellbeing and resilience in communities, community cohesion and connection to green spaces.

Beat the Street East Kilbride is being delivered by Intelligent Health on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council. The project is supported by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture and is funded by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.

Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor Robert Brown, said: “There’s just one more week in the Beat the Street East Kilbride competition and it’s been just great to see people out and about walking, running and cycling to score points.

“There are double points on every Beat Box this week giving everyone an opportunity to make a surprise leap up the leaderboards – or cement your place at the top. Enjoy the final week of the game.”

The winners will be available at www.beatthestreet.me/eastkilbride and on social media at @BTSEastKilbride
