An agricultural show run by the Tarbolton Farmers’ Society was held last month at Burns Trout Fishery.

Tarbolton Show took place on Saturday, September 28, with a good number of entries throughout all sections, including vintage machinery, roots, horse and ponies, dairy and beef cattle.

The vintage section was won by an original untouched Massey Fergusson 165, by Alex Johnston and a road run was enjoyed round the local area.

Willie Bryson from Lesmahagow was the judge for the dairy classes where Robbie Scott and Salvador Esquierdo lifted the Red and White Champion Trophy and Ewan Kennedy won the Champion Holstein Dairy Animal, before going on to lift the Supreme Dairy Champion Trophy.

Iain Howie won the class for Best Pair of Dairy Cows and George Borland lifted the trophies for Best Group of 3 and 4 Dairy Cattle.

The calf classes were a hard-fought battle with Olivia Wilson winning the junior section and Struan Kennedy winning the senior section and also taking the Rottenrow Trophy for the Best Presented Calf.

The beef section was once again dominated by father and son, John and James Hunter with two pure bred limousin cows taking the Roughdyke salver.

The roots had a great number of entries and Jim Anderson had the task of judging; with Dawson winning, closely followed by Iain Howie.

In the horse and pony section, jumping classes were dominated by Niamh Boyle in the lead rein jumping, Emily Smith in the 40cm and Emma Mitchell coming out on top in the remaining classes.

Fern Allan lifted the trophy for Champion Pony, Emma Dunlop for Champion Mountain & Moorland and Emma McGahon for Champion Horse.

In the pony section, the day was rounded off with the pony games, where Emily Smith lifted the Wee Scoutts Challenge Trophy for most points in the games.

Alex Woodburn had the unenviable task of judging the champion of champions. With three tremendous entries of a dairy cow from Ewan Kennedy, a beef cow from John Hunter and a horse from Emma McGahon it was no easy decision, but Hamish the horse, owned by Tarbolton local Emma McGahon lifted the Walston Trophy for the champion of champions.

An ex-racehorse run under the race name Garron Crescent and now retired, lifted the Silver Cup for best horse, the Outmains Perpetual trophy for overall champion horse and then lifted the champion of champions Walston Cup for overall best animal in show.

As always a light-hearted pets class took place with Zoe the Jack Russell, led by Olivia Wilson taking top place in the pet dog class and rabbit Pompom shown by Abbey and Molly Dykes in the other pets section.

The day was rounded off with some kids races, where everyone was a winner as the sweetie box was the top attraction.

Alison Dykes, Tarbolton Farmers’ Society Secretary, commented: “A huge thank you to everyone who helped and competed at the show, it was a great success and thanks must also go to our hosts, the Kelso and Alexander family.”

Earlier in the summer Tarbolton show also held their annual cropping competition in July, a difficult year for growing crops but Stuart Mitchell and Gordon Caldwell enjoyed their day judging.

Drew Wilson won the best grassland, David & John Neil won the best spring barley, Robert Veitch the best winter cereal and Alistair Hodge won the best aftermath and most outstanding crop.

In the overall section Robert Veitch was placed 3rd, Robin Hamilton 2nd and Alistair Hodge 1st, winning the Langlands trophy. An outstanding achievement for Alistair winning both the best crop and overall competition for the 2nd year running.

A presentation of prizes will be held in November at the Masonic Hall where a social night will be enjoyed by all.
