Three taste testers have been left gobsmacked by a supermarket branded version of Jaffa Cakes being “better” than the McVitie’s original.

In a blind test tasting four different versions of the cake, three participants; chef and journalist Jonathan Phang, food writer Alexandra Dudley and comedian Tom Reid Wilson, gave their honest opinions on each one.

Kicking things off with plate A, Tom said of the snack: “I don’t think this is the original, but I think it is better than the original.”

Moving onto plate B, all three were left disappointed by the taste, particularly Jonathan who insisted it was pretty flavourless.

With plate C on the other hand, Alexandra believed it was the original Jaffa Cake, while Jonathan said: “It’s been a long time, but I don’t remember it being like that, you can barely taste the orange.”

Ranked in last place by all three, plate D was branded “stale” and “chewy”, as Tom declared: “I hope that’s not the original.”

After trying all four, the trio agreed that plate A was their favourite, followed by plate C in second, and B in third place.

When the results were revealed, the taste testers were surprised to learn that their preferred version was in fact not the original.

Instead, it was identified as Lidl’s considerably cheaper version, priced at £1.19 for a box of 24.

Plate C in second place was the next to be revealed as Aldi’s Jaffa cakes, also a box of 24, for £1.35.

“This is really something of a steal,” Tom said of the result before announcing that “the most expensive by a considerable margain” was the Mcvitie’s original, priced at £2.30 for a box of 20.

Lastly, D was revealed as Tesco’s version, described by the store as “spongy and fruity”, for £1.35 for 24.
