Motorists have been warned of severe delays on the A27 today after a slow-moving convoy carrying sensitive cargo will travel down the road at just 12 mph.

The slow-moving convoy is transporting two pieces of large electrical equipment from Shoreham Port in West Sussex to a substation near Uckfield in the east.

The 24-mile journey, which includes travelling on the A27, A26 and A22, is expected to take between six and eight hours.

Diversions are in place across the A27 eastbound, with motorists advised to take travel down Devil’s Dyke roundabout and westbound from Lewes Road.

Lane one of the A27’s eastbound road from Devil’s Dyke Road to the A23 roundabout will remain open to re-route traffic onto the diversion.

Several junctions onto the A27 are also shut.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said: ‘Motorists are asked not to follow satellite navigation systems but instead to follow the diversion signs in place.’
