While we all love that fresh carpet look and feel, it’s not always easy keeping your floors in tip-top shape.

Between pet hair and drink spillages, carpets may begin to smell or look shabby over time. But if the idea of finding time for a deep clean fills you with dread, you may be interested to learn that there’s a simple way to give them a thorough clean in just 15 minutes.

Paul Brewster, a flooring expert from Flooring Hut, has shared a household staple that could be the secret to reviving your carpets. “Keeping your carpets clean and free of stubborn odours doesn’t always require harsh shop-bought products,” he advised.

The expert suggests that natural ingredients can be just as effective and are often safer for your family and pets. His top pick for a natural deep cleaning solution is baking soda. “Baking soda is a go-to natural ingredient for neutralising odours,” he explained.

“Its porous nature allows it to absorb unwanted smells effectively. To use it, simply sprinkle a generous amount over areas where odours linger.” He recommends letting it sit for at least 15 minutes or, ideally, a few hours or overnight, then vacuuming it up for a fresher scent, reports the Express.

Brewster noted: “For homes with pets or young kids, using baking soda once a month can help maintain a clean, fresh environment.”

Additionally, he mentioned essential oils like tea tree or lavender as another natural option for carpet cleaning. “A few drops mixed with baking soda or vinegar can enhance your cleaning routine,” he explained.

“To use essential oils, simply add them to your chosen cleaning solution before applying it to the carpet.” He added that this combination can be used whenever you deep clean your carpets or as needed when refreshing the scent.

Any stubborn stains on the carpet can be combatted with the powerful cleaning combination of baking soda and vinegar. Brewster instructed: “To apply, create a paste by mixing the two ingredients and apply it directly to the stain.

“Let it fizz and work for a few minutes, then blot with a clean cloth. After it dries, vacuum up any residue.”
