Hansi Flick’s near-perfect start at Barcelona reached new heights last night with a superb 4-0 away victory against arch rivals Real Madrid – but an amusing clip of the German that draws resemblance to one-time Rangers boss Graeme Murty has gone viral.
During the La Liga clash at the Santiago Bernabeu, the former Germany and Bayern Munich gaffer hilariously reacted to his side squandering a chance by collapsing on his back before doing a backwards roll to get back onto his feet. Flick’s side now sit six points clear at the top of the league having won all 10 games so far and the only blip on his record with the Catalan giants so far came in a 2-1 defeat to Monaco in the Champions League.
The 59-year-old’s acrobatics in Madrid were of a similar ilk to the acrobatics performed by Gers’ interim gaffer Murty during his first spell in temporary charge in February 2017 after Mark Warburton had been given the boot. With his team trailing Dundee by two goals to one with 10 minutes remaining, Murty was left with egg on his face after an attempt at a headstand failed badly in reaction to Rangers passing up an opportunity to force an equaliser.
One fan joked Flick had ‘done a Murty’ drawing comparison between the two athletic feats. Former Scotland cap Murty returned to his role as a development coach when Pedro Caixinha was named as Rangers boss a few weeks later but found himself back in the hot seat in the following October after the Portuguese manager’s ill-fated seven month stint came to an end.
Murty was handed the reins until the end of the season, but the campaign ended in bitter disappointment as Rangers were hammered 4-0 by Celtic in the semi final of the Scottish Cup and had to settle for third place in the Premiership behind Aberdeen.
The 49-year-old remained with the club under Steven Gerrard and Giovanni van Bronckhorst before moving on to become Sunderland’s U21 manager in October 2022.
