Prime Video has just given fans a tantalising glimpse into the eagerly anticipated second season of the intense thriller featuring Line of Duty star Martin Compston.

Alongside him, Game of Thrones’ Iain Glen and Schitt’s Creek alumni Emily Hampshire star in this six-part series, which holds the distinction of being the streaming service’s first original production shot entirely on Scottish soil.

After debuting in January 2023 to rapturous acclaim, the show quickly ascended to one of Prime Video’s top dramas, leaving legions of viewers clamouring for its continuation.

Nearly two years on, Prime Video has now solidified that The Rig will return with its sophomore installment come January next year, whilst supplying fans with sneak peeks of what’s to unfold.

Glen, Hampshire, and Compston are confirmed for another outing, joined once again by Rochenda Sandall and Mark Addy, reports the Mirror.

The upcoming series is also set to welcome fresh faces, including Alice Krige, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Ross Anderson, Phil McKee, and Johannes Roaldsen Furst to its ensemble.

Moreover, the next chapter sees a bold narrative move as it transports audiences to an enigmatic compound nestled within the Arctic Circle.

The intrigue woven through the drama has already ensnared its audience, with one glowing five-star critique praising: “This was one of the best thought out shows I’ve ever seen. The scenery was amazing and so well executed and same with the story line. Every episode you always wanted to know more which made it more gripping.

“The fact that it wasn’t too wild with the supernatural activity made it perfect and almost like it was real. To add to that the casting was amazing and they fit the roles so well I’d happily watch season 2 if there is one to come.”

Another chimed in with praise: “I loved the show and found it really gripping. Wanted to keep watching after each episode and was a bit gutted when it was over. I just really hope they make another one.”

A third person expressed their fascination with the concept: “The Rig was absolutely brilliant. it gets you within the first few minutes which I love because I easily get bored but this was just excellent, but it also makes you think about nature paying us back for the way we treat our planet. I’ll say no more. don’t want to spoil it for you. it’s a full 10/10 from me.”

Yet another fan enthused: “Very good and edge of seat stuff. Shame it is only one season at the moment, excited to see what happens in the next series.”

The intriguing preview for the upcoming season tantalises fans: “Helicopters have taken the surviving crew of the Kinloch Bravo to a new secret offshore facility called the Stac, nestled deep in the extraordinary and deadly landscapes of the Arctic Circle.

It continues: “Here, the trapped crew must deal with the emotional and physical fallout of the devastating tsunami that destroyed the Bravo, and contend with swirling conspiracies, corporate conflicts, and new threats from the dark depths of the world’s ocean.

“The second series will continue exploring global themes – weaving together the past, present, and future of the planet while taking the viewer to spectacular environments and drawing on the frontiers of cutting edge ocean technology – including the controversial world of deep sea mining.

“David Macpherson has created a new story that delivers epic thrills and gripping action for a compelling cast of characters, both returning and new.”

The Rig is available to stream on Prime Video. Season 2 premieres January 2025.
