The cost of living crisis is wreaking havoc in the UK – with many struggling to make ends meet.

So instead of battling sky-high energy prices, soaring rent costs and spending a fortune on groceries, some are deciding to relocate abroad instead.

Jodie Marlow, known as @jodiemar1ow on TikTok, shared how much you can reduce utility bills by doing this. She couldn’t believe how cheap things were after moving to Spain.

In an online clip, she explained she doesn’t have any rent or mortgage payments as they own their property outright. However, she still has day to day costs and bills to contend with.

Jodie confessed the cost of electricity is also “really good”, as she has recently switched providers. She gushed: “Oh my gosh, amazing.

“Last month, before I really put the aircon on, was €37 (£30.82). This month I’ve had the aircon on nearly every night for the boys and, I think when I tried to look quickly because it’s not generated fully, it’s around €55 to €60 (around £45.82), which I think is nothing.”

She added: “So, if anyone lives in Spain and pays their own electricity bills, you need to message me. I can’t believe how cheap it’s changed to.

“Water is around €99 (£82.47) every three months, so that’s €33 (£27.49) every month. The house actually runs off a gas bottle. I thought it was really weird at first but, actually, it’s pretty normal in Spain, and a gas bottle costs around €16 (£13.33).”

When the weather is warm, costs can reduce even more. That’s because people are less likely to have scorching hot showers or use the gas hobs to make meals. In terms of running costs, a gas bottle can stretch for three months on a good run.

Jodie puts her council tax at around €21 (£17.49) a month, which is around the same that she pays for home insurance. It all seems very reasonable – and people in the comments section agree too.

One commenter exclaimed: “60 Euros a month! We spend £40 per week for a four-bed house in England.” In response, someone chimed in with: “Oh my god, your electric is so cheap. Ours is so much more!”

Meanwhile, a third also replied: “So cheap. My gas and electric is £250 together, and my council tax is like £180 a month.”
