Defiant Lewis Ferguson says his “Scottish mentality” got him through his Bologna injury nightmare, as the Serie A side get set to welcome back their battling captain.

Scotland midfielder Ferguson went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows when a horror knee injury ended his season in April and shattered his Euro 2024 dream. He was voted the best midfielder in Italy last season and looked set to play a big role for Steve Clarke‘s team at the Euros, with the vultures swirling ahead of a mega-money transfer. But a brutal ACL setback shelved him for six months and he’s only now on the verge of a return.

Bologna have rolled out the red carpet for him as he could make his first appearance since April 13 against Cagliari this weekend. And they’ve posted a hair-raising video package on their social media platforms featuring an in-depth interview with the former Aberdeen star. In it, he says his “Scottish mentality” is what has got him through.

Ferguson said: “I just want to become as strong as possible, I want to have the same feelings that I had last season when I played. This is just the nature of a Scottish player. We have the desire and will to win. This is just the Scottish mentality. You work hard and fight every day to become better.”
