(CNN) – The issue of broken McFlurry machines at McDonald’s may finally be solved – and it has come down to a court ruling.

McDonald’s says its restaurants weren’t able to fix their ice cream machines because the company that manufactured the machines owned the copyright and exclusive rights to repair them – until now.

Starting Monday, a copyright exemption will go into effect, giving restaurants the right to repair the machines themselves.

The exemption bypasses digital locks that had prevented the machines from being fixed.

McDonald’s broken ice cream machines have gained their own cult following.

There’s even a customer-run website that tracks the malfunctions called McBroken.
