Scottish Water is reassuring customers in North Lanarkshire that their water supplies are safe to use as normal, following reports of discolouration affecting households across the area.

Operatives are continuing an extensive flushing programme in Wishaw, Newmains, Bellside, Chapelhall, and Newarthill.

The discolouration began on the evening of October 23 as a result of valve operations on the network.

The programme of flushing continued into the weekend.

When natural sediment within the network is disturbed, it is common for water to appear discoloured.

To help clear the issue, customers should run their cold-water kitchen tap at a reduced pressure until the water runs clear.

Leave all other taps and water appliances off while doing so.

Once the water is clear from your cold-water kitchen tap, repeat the same process with any other taps affected.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We would like to assure customers from a public health perspective who are concerned with the colour change to their water supply that we are continuing to liaise with the Drinking Water Quality Regulator (DWQR) and NHS Lanarkshire on this.

“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused and would like to reassure those affected that we are doing everything we can to help clear the discolouration. Thank you for your patience during this time.”

Communication is ongoing with customers on their Priority Service Register to understand what support is required, and providing alternative water supplies to customers who require this.

The publicly-owned utility company will continue to provide regular updates as the situation progresses, which will be available to view on their Facebook and X channels, alongside a dedicated service updates webpage.
