A British teenager with a peanut allergyhas died after going into anaphylactic shock while on holiday with her family in Rome, Italian media reported.

The 14-year-old is understood to have been eating a dessert which had traces of nuts within dried fruit on Thursday, just hours after their flight touched down.

She was treated by doctors, but nothing could be done to save her, La Repubblica reported.

Local media have named the victim as Skylar, but this has not yet been confirmed.

Her family had dined at a pizzeria in the residential Gianicolense neighborhood in the Italian capital.

The following day they had booked a visit to the Vatican Museum, the Colosseum
and the Imperial Forums.

It was around 15 minutes after leaving the restaurant that the girl felt really sick and collapsed in the hotel.

She was rushed to San Camillo hospital a few miles away, but it was all too late to save her.

Her father is said to have been so shocked by the events that he was hospitalised himself with heart problems.

It is not yet clear whether the girl or her parents had informed the waiters about her allergy.

Italian police have opened an investigation into what happened and have since interviewed the staff at the restaurant.

Prosecutors and health inspectors are looking into whether the restaurant workers may be responsible, suspecting that the girl died from an allergic reaction caused by a ‘packaged dessert’, according to Corriere della Sera

The family insisted that their daughter was extremely vigilant about her allergy and typically informed restaurants about her dietary requirements.
