A healthy living fayre took place at Loudoun Academy earlier this month to promote a healthy lifestyle.

On the night the entertainment included a disco bouncy castle, Zumba, face painting and the Killie Academy sports team.

There were free healthy snacks, smoothies and drinks, including teas and coffees, all made by pupils and staff and free soup made on the night from fresh vegetables grown in the school garden.

Subject department stalls included a variety of activities such as arts and crafts, home gym exercises, books and leaflets promoting the benefits of reading for good mental health, PE keep fit activities, music therapy and language learning techniques.

Businesses from the community such as QTS came in to teach people about the dangers of energy drinks while the Kilmarnock Community Health Team came in to teach about the dangers of smoking, particularly vaping.

The Tesco Galston store provided fresh fruit and bottled water for the event.

The event took place on Wednesday, October 9 and was well attended and supported.

PT English teacher Mrs Debbie McCrone organised the event after being inspired by S4 pupil’s ideas.

Mrs McCrone said: “S4 pupils were completing a Group Talk for the N4 Literacy qualification where they had to create their own Healthy Living event. Their ideas were so good and they were so enthusiastic we thought we’d organise a real event.

“We felt it was important to have such an event as it would promote good physical and mental health and would allow S4-6 pupils to lead the event, demonstrating leadership qualities and incorporating their own ideas, while the event would encourage a Community and Team spirit and positive school ethos, demonstrating the new Visions, Values and Aims policy in action.

“The event was entertaining and informative and was enjoyed and attended by staff, pupils, parents and families and members of the community, such as Labour councillor, Kevin McGregor.

“We would definitely organise a similar event in the future. It was well attended and supported. We felt it brought the school and community closer together.”
