HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Three Greek chapters at Marshall University have been suspended amid a hazing investigation, according to university officials.
Officials confirmed on Tuesday that two fraternities and one sorority have been issued cease and desist letters pending an internal investigation.
The fraternities were identified by university officials as Alpha Sigma Phi and Alpha Tau Omega, and the sorority is Alpha Xi Delta.
The cease and desist means the chapters can not participate as an organization in any campus activities, host gatherings, or parties.
Officials say the hazing investigation was sparked after two separate incidents.
“Allegations of sexual misconduct, alcohol abuse, humiliation and other hazing activities were reported,” the university said in the following statement released Tuesday night:
“Marshall University announced today that three Greek organizations have been placed on temporary suspension while an investigation takes place regarding alleged hazing infractions.
“There are two separate incidents. One involves Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and Alpha Xi Delta sorority and the second incident involves Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. All three organizations are temporarily prohibited from engaging as a group in any university activities until the investigation is completed. The chapters’ advisors and national organizations have been informed of the charges.
“Several university units, including the Office of Student Advocacy and Accountability and the Office of Title IX, are involved in the internal investigation which is underway. Allegations of sexual misconduct, alcohol abuse, humiliation and other hazing activities were reported.
“The university was made aware of allegations through a student complaint and social media posts.
“Marshall University does not tolerate any form of hazing and takes all complaints seriously. Students who wish to make a complaint, may connect through the Marshall University Advocate System.
“As this is an ongoing process, no further comments will be given until the investigation is complete.”
