Dressing up for Halloween is all fun and games until your chosen accessories for your costume causes irreversible damage to your teeth.
A top dentist has warned that wearing fake teeth or vampire fangs at Halloween can result in “permanent damage” to your teeth if not used properly.
According to the experts, ill-fitting costume teeth not only risk discomfort but can also cause issues if adhesives or cements are used to keep them in place.
Dr Andrej Bozic who is an oral surgeon at Dentum has warned: “Adhesives and cements to secure costume teeth can be a real risk. Improper application can irritate gums, wear down enamel, or damage dental work.
“For anyone considering costume teeth, it’s worth thinking twice before risking your natural enamel for a night.”
The doctor has explained the dangers in more detail as well as providing some top tips on how to protect your teeth.
Enamel damage from costume adhesives
While enamel is one of the hardest substances in the human body, costume adhesives and cements can still cause damage to it if misused.
Many store bought Halloween fangs are held in place with generic adhesives that may be difficult to remove and can weaken or scratch enamel if rubbed or scrubbed too hard.
Dr Bozic warned: “Dental work like crowns or fillings is especially vulnerable to damage from costume adhesives, which can lead to permanent damage and costly repairs down the line”.
Costume teeth and bacteria build up
Another concern about costume teeth is that they’re often made of porous materials that trap bacteria. If not cleaned thoroughly, these accessories can bring bacteria into your mouth which may lead to infections or decay.
Dr Bozic explained: “Bacteria buildup is easy with these accessories. If costume teeth aren’t cleaned thoroughly, it’s like putting a germ-filled object directly in your mouth.
“You’re not only risking short-term issues but also exposing your teeth to bacteria that can cause long-term damage.”
Tips to protect your teeth
Avoid adhesives when possible – If possible, use costume teeth that don’t require adhesives or cements. If they are necessary, avoid over-the-counter products and consider a dentist-approved option instead
Limit wear time – Try to limit wearing costume teeth to short periods, avoiding prolonged pressure on your teeth and gums. Also, refrain from eating or drinking with them in, which may lead to bacteria build up.
Clean thoroughly – Clean your costume teeth before and after each use. Do this by soaking them in a denture-cleaning solution or wash them with mild soap and warm water to minimise bacteria.
Don’t share – Do not offer use of your costume teeth to others. Shared accessories can spread bacteria, leading to oral health issues.
Consult your dentist – If you have dental work, such as crowns or braces, check with your dentist before using costume teeth to avoid potential damage.
