Saoirse Ronan has broken her silence after a clip from the Graham Norton Show went viral as she left guests silenced after a brutally honest comment.
Last week, Graham welcomed Eddie Redmayne, Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington onto his red sofa to discuss their upcoming projects.
In one moment, Eddie, 42, told a story about learning self-defence for his new TV series The Day of the Jackal and being told to use his phone as a weapon to jab into someone’s neck.
Paul then joked: ‘Who is actually going to think about that?
‘If someone actually attacked me, I’m not going to go “phone”,’ he said then gesturing as if to take a phone out of his pocket.
While the audience laughed Saoirse, 30, replied: ‘That’s what girls have to think about all the time.’
The guests were stunned into silence, and Saoirse then spoke to the audience: ‘Am I right ladies?’ And was met with a round of applause.
The actress has now addressed the viral moment and told Ryan Tubridy on Virgin Radio UK on Wednesday morning: ‘The reaction has been wild.
‘It’s definitely not something that I had expected, and I didn’t necessarily set out to sort of make a splash. But I do think there’s something really telling about the society that we’re in right now and about how open women want to be with the men in their lives.
‘So many men and women that I know from all over the world have gotten in touch with me about this one comment, which is, again, I would urge people, please, please, please to watch this in context.
‘Please watch the whole interview or watch at least that part of the conversation, because it really wasn’t about… the boys weren’t sort of like debunking anything that I was saying.
‘But at the same time, it felt very similar to like when I am at dinner with a bunch of my friends and I will always make the point that, well, this is actually an experience that we go through every single day, 100%.’
Fans loved this bold interaction from Saoirse as she pointed out the brutally honest truth.
‘Saoirse Ronan gagging men we love to see it,’ said Rvdlovess.
‘This encapsulates men being ignorant of male privilege in a nutshell. the fact that these guys– nice guys, mind– are just so unaware is almost terrifying. thank goodness for Saoirse though because we all need a bit more attention drawn to this’ Edithcrxwley said.
‘Well done for saying it, Saoirse Ronan. End Violence Against Women & Girls,’ AmandaFBelfast commented.
‘Saoirse Ronan is a queen. Men need a reminder what it’s like being a woman so they can appreciate their privilege. The silence after she said that speaks volumes,’ said chicanery1988.
The actress was on the show to promote her new film Blitz, which has already received huge Oscar buzz.
While promoting her new film, the star has made several startling comments including a revelation in a recent interview that she’d love in the James Bond franchise.
She added that her husband, Slow Horses actor , whose name has already been mentioned in the mix for Bond, would also be a fabulous Bond for her to play against.
