Two Scots sisters jetted off to Copenhagen from Edinburgh Airport for the price of a night out.

Annabel McTaggart, 28, and her sister Maria flew from Edinburgh Airport to Copenhagen for the day – and said they would have spent the same amount on a night out back home.

‘Extreme day trips’ have become a hobby for individuals looking to fit in some travel on their days off. Speaking with Edinburgh Live, the enthusiastic jet setter stated that she only had a few days off and that after discovering cheap roundtrip flights with Ryanair, she and her sister packed their things.

Annabel, who works in airport security, said: “We had to get up at 5am and drive from Ayrshire to Edinburgh to there on time for the 9.10am flight out. We budgeted for it and made our breakfast at home to cut down on cost.”

Annabel discovered that same-day flights were cheaper and spent £112 on return tickets for October 26 and kept a strict budget in Copenhagen. The sisters took a flight back to Edinburgh at 9.35pm that same night and arrived home by 1am.

“This was the first day trip I’ve done and it was amazing. I’ve got two more booked now! It was so easy because the airport in Cophenhagen is a short metro ride into the city centre and the ticket is just £7 return. I couldn’t get over how clean the city was.

“When we got there, we headed to a food market and picked up Danish pastries and sausages. Because we knew we had such little time, we tried to squeeze in as much as we could. I love exploring new cities and sightseeing.”

In just seven hours, Annabel and Maria visited the iconic colourful street, Nyhavn, Rosenborg Castle, The King’s Garden, Malienborg Palace and saw the little mermaid monument as well as Kastellet Fortress. The pair also got a chance to stop by Buka Cafe to try a viral croissant.

She continued: “The food was expensive, I would say that. But overall we only spent £135 between us. We got food, drinks, metro tickets and souvenirs.

“Some people might think it’s a lot of money, but to be honest, that is what I’d spend on a night out and meal back in Scotland.

“I have the bug now. I have booked to Warsaw in Poland and then I’ve booked two nights in Vienna where we will also go to Bratislava for one of the days. I would love to go back to Copenhagen but have an extra day to go to Sweden, it’s just a short train ride and that could be done in a day too.

“It was tiring but I slept on the plane going there and going back. But it was so worth it!”

Annabel is documenting her travelling over on Instagram and sharing her extreme day trips on @annabelstravelsx.
