David Jamieson hopes winning a Commonwealth Silver title next month will act as a springboard to bigger and better things in 2025.
Heavyweight Jamieson is waiting to learn his opponent for the title shot at Doubletree by Hilton in Glasgow, in Kynoch’s KO Chaos fight night on Saturday, November 23, but it will be one of three potential foes. Winning that could propel the Westwood fighter back to the big time, and will result in a major fight at PlaySport in East Kilbride next year.
The possibilities are huge, and Jamieson says he will be well prepared.
He said: “This Commonwealth Silver ensures me a top-10 ranking in the UK. I don’t know what it does European-wise, if it’s top-20 or something like that.
“This will ensure a bit of leverage to get back on the big shows with the big platforms, and maybe get in contention for a European or a British title shot again.
“It will open up doors. It’s a stepping stone, if you will. It’s getting me back in, and now that I’ve proved my worth with the big platforms previously, taking things at short notice, this is like a run on our terms.
“It’s getting everything in place, taking the time, getting the body right, which is the main thing.
“The performances are speaking for themselves in knocking everybody out, so if I pick this title up it will hopefully be a springboard into bigger things.”
While still fighting at heavyweight, Jamieson will bring himself down to cruiserweight again next year.
He said: “My opponent is still to be confirmed. There are three names in the pot, to be approved by the Commonwealth council. In order for it to be Commonwealth Silver, it’s subject to their approval and it needs to be a contender that merits fighting for the title.
“I’ve got two back-to-back knockout at heavyweight, fingers crossed it will be another one in November, and then we’ll look at bringing ourselves back down to cruiserweight for a bigger fight next year.
“We’ll do a catch weight in February; I’ll bring myself down to the 15-stone mark, and that sets me up to make 14.4, going into the spring.
“If I pick up the Commonwealth Silver here it’s looking like a big fight in February at PlaySport.”
Jamieson is in intense training in the build-up to his Commonwealth Silver title shot, and feels great.
He said: “I thrive off the structure. I’m back in a training camp, training twice a day four days a week, and once a day on the other days. I’m thoroughly enjoying it.
“I feel great. I’m thoroughly enjoying it. It’s nice coming in, not having to rush things, having a bit of a roadmap, and you can just structure everything accordingly.”
