Mediumship is the practice of communicating with spirits of the dead, which may conjure up imagery for you of Victorian seances, black veils, Ouija boards and people in trances.
And while it’s true that most of those elements are part of mediumship and used by mediums to make their connections, it doesn’t have to be like that.
There are quieter, simpler, easier, and less dramatic ways to practice mediumship yourself, in everyday life, as part of your ordinary day. And it can be comforting rather than scary or ominous.
That’s because it’s about the connection, more than the ritual. It’s about the message you believe you’re hearing, not the channel. It’s about creating meaning in your own life, extracted from the death and life lessons of others.
Since my dad’s death in 2020 I have been (unconsciously I must admit, I didn’t set to ‘be a medium’) feeling more and more connected to the spirit world. And I have started to talk to those I love who have passed over and even experienced what has felt like a two-way dialogue at times.
I didn’t use a Ouija board or my tarot cards (though there’s nothing wrong with that). I just walked in the places I would’ve spent time with them in life, or where their ashes are, and asked for wisdom or a message in my head.
In response, I have sentences spoken loudly in my mind, I have found things on the floor that resonated with me and I derived meaning from. My favourite was a rock that I picked up and immediately felt resembled the heft of my father’s hand, like we were holding hands. I have kept that rock, and hold it now and again when I want to feel his presence or humour or shrewd wisdom.
I have started to actively collect, curate and wear or use the possessions of those I have loved and lost. I talk to them and listen for messages back (even if it’s just what I imagine they’d say). I even do this with my pet cat Chief Brodie who died in 2022. He continues to have adventures, be around the house, lie next to me and purr. You can continue a relationship even between realms, through the veil. Use your imagination, open your heart and mind.
This is something you can do. This is achievable in everyday life. And Halloween makes for a perfect time to give it a go.
Types of medium
Depending on the type of sixth sense (I think we all possess glimmers and, in life, we can encounter experiences that trigger its amplification and use) you possess, you might experience your communications in different ways.
For example, pick up on the feelings, emotions and health of others, receiving information through physical, mental or visual impressions. Messages may also come in the form of a gut feeling or physical sensations like a tingling spine, hairs on neck or arms standing up, or a buzzing or sudden cold feeling.
pick up psychic impressions through the mind’s eye (third eye), and may actually see a vision with their physical eyes – via sight, layers of a vision beneath the present, dreams, movie scenes, symbols. This group can sometimes see spirits as if they are alive, as well as auras, and are highly visual, creative, imaginative, and artistic with vivid dreams.
And are practical realists who like to see, sense and feel things through hands and what they touch – sometimes they can pick up on the energy or history of an object. There are psychic impressions stored in objects around us, which can come to them as feelings, symbols, images, movie scenes, knowledge.
If you’d like to accelerate your clair-talent then the below exercise, repeated daily throughout this season, might begin to open up your abilities.
Exercise to part the veil between worlds
It is useful to enact some physical gesture to trigger this tuning in, to activate your psychic sight, a message to the non-verbal parts of you that you’re ready, willing and interested in seeing beyond the physical realm!
Press your hands together in front of you, your fingertips should be touching and pointed outwards.
Using deep breaths that pull in energy from your surroundings, move energy from your core to your shoulders, down your arms, and into your hands.
You may wish to push your hands together with a subtle pulsing pressure as the energy between them builds up.
When you think you’re ‘charged’, move your hands forwards as if you were pushing your fingertips into the place where two curtains meet.
Pull your hands apart using the same movement you would use to open curtains, thus opening the veils, and creating a portal for your psychic sight.
Look through your portal. What do you see/hear/feel/touch… record your impressions.
