BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – International students at Bluefield State University are giving the public a chance to taste foods from across the globe. It’s part of the school’s annual United Nations Day lunch which aims to bring people together and cherish each other’s heritage.
“This is when we get together to remind ourselves who we are, where we come from and why it’s important to cherish who we are,” said Dr. Sudhakar Jamkhandi, director for the office of international initiatives at BSU.
Around 20 different countries will be represented at the lunch, including Germany and Ghana. An international student from Germany says she’ll be making a dessert native to her country.
“I will do a typical German dessert, kaiserchmarrn. It’s sweet, hard to explain it. It’s a sweet dessert,” said Rebecca Neumeier.
Another student from Ghana says he’ll be making rice and tomato stew for people to try. It includes chicken and a lot of vegetables.
“You have to boil some oil, fry some onions, fry some tomatoes. That’s what you’re going to do so it’s going to take a long time. Even when you’re done adding everything you have to wait for at least an hour to make sure everything is well cooked,” said Sampson Anaba.
The event is being held Saturday, Nov. 2 from 11 am to 1 pm at the Tail Yard Park on Raleigh Street. City leaders encourage the public to attend the event and try some new foods.
“We’ve got some kids from South America down in Argentina. I think the community will get a very great taste of the world culture and world food if they can make a trip down by the dog park on Saturday and have a great time,” said Bluefield City Manager, Cecil Marson.
There is a cost to try food at the event which is $15. Funding gathered from the event will be used to take international students at Bluefield State University to Washington D.C. to tour the U.S. Capitol.
