Motherwell and Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson has thrown her support behind Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) Awareness Month which takes place throughout November.
CRPS is a debilitating chronic disorder, mostly affecting the limbs, which is characterised by severe pain, pathological changes of bones, joints and skin, swelling, temperature and colour changes and motor dysfunction.
It can cause a person to experience persistent, severe and debilitating pain. The condition may develop after an injury, surgery, stroke or heart attack, but the pain is out of proportion with the severity of the initial injury.
Ms Adamson lodged a Parliamentary motion to mark CRPS Awareness Month.
The SNP MSP said: “Awareness events are particularly important for under recognised conditions like CRPS. The condition is poorly understood and this has led to challenges getting research into its effects.
“The first Monday of November is Colour the World Orange Day. The initiative encourages businesses, town halls and landmarks to change their lights to orange in support of people with CRPS.
“The volunteers and organisers of CRPS Awareness Month will be lots of events across the month to highlight the debilitating impact that CRPS has on people.
“We need more research development into CRPS and to ensure that people are aware of the condition and what treatment options or support pathways are available.
“Please do what you can to help raise awareness of CRPS.
“Even if it just talking to someone you know who has described having similar symptoms. It could make a big difference to their quality of life with the right support in place.”
