There’s only one thing better than a delicious Sunday roast, and that’s a free one.

And now, one pub chain is offering a delicious, 14-hour slow-cooked carvery meat or vegetarian pie on the house — all for a worthwhile cause.

Farmhouse Inns, who run 66 pubs in the UK are offering the free meals in a bid to tackle the loneliness and isolation, that often comes with the colder months.

It goes without saying that some sections of society feel the darker, gloomier side of winter far more than others. One such group is the 65+ year olds, our precious grandparents.

So, in an effort to bridge the ‘isolation’ gap amongst families who seldom get to spend time with their elders, Farmhouse Inns is now offering free carvery for grandparents throughout November.

How to get a free Sunday roast at Farmhouse Inns

Launching their ‘Grand Day Out’ campaign across 66 pubs in Greater London and surrounding counties, Farmhouse Inns’ latest initiative is available every Tuesday, all November.

Simply order a kid’s meal or a junior carvery on Tuesday, November 5, 12, 19 and 26, and then ask for ‘a Grand Day Out’ while ordering, to get one of their 14-hour slow-cooked carvery meats or vegetarian pie on the house for your grandparent or elderly loved one.

Their classic roast comes with steamy vegetables, crispy roasted potatoes and traditional Yorkshire puddings.

The idea is that the offer will encourage families to spend more time with their older generations.

‘Feelings of loneliness and isolation are an issue that affect a lot of us, particularly our grandparents and older loved ones during the colder and darker months,’ said Hannah Davison, marketing manager at the pub chain.

She added, ‘We hope that families around the country take this opportunity to treat their grandparents with a carvery plate filled to the brim on us.’

Loneliness and isolation among grandparents

Recent research shows a troubling trend of loneliness among the elderly. Nearly 43% of those aged 65 and over report feeling lonely up to five times a week. The study also revealed that about 24% of them have gone days without any social interaction in the past year.

Shorter days and limited sunlight sure doesn’t help the cause, with over 57% grandparents admitting that evenings are the hardest to get through. To further exacerbate feelings of isolation, more than a third of them are almost never invited to social gatherings.

Farmhouse Inns’ initiative helps combat this isolation, by encouraging family gatherings around meals, particularly hearty Sunday roasts.

Author and beloved Hollyoaks grandma Sherrie Hewson, sharing her own experience, said: ‘As a proud grandma, there is literally nothing I love doing more than spending time with my grandchildren. The energy they have is infectious and making memories with them is something I cherish more than anything.’

With more than half (54%) of the grandparents feeling more and more insignificant to the people around them, a cosy get-together with carveries at the heart of it could be one of the many ways to make them feel more welcome.
