The Diplomat season two has dropped on Netflix in its entirety so what happened in the finale of this latest series?

Keri Russell returns as US ambassador to the UK, Kate Wyler, who’s been on a mission to uncover who orchestrated the bombing of HM Courageous at the end of the first series.

After much sleuthing and unexpected plot twists, she finally uncovers the truth – and it’s not what anyone anticipated.

The Diplomat season 2 ending explained

From the get-go of the first season, there were strong hints that Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (played by Rory Kinnear) was behind the attack. However, this turned out to be a red herring.

It became clear that his close ally Meg Roylin (Celia Imrie) was implicated. To determine if Trowbridge had any knowledge of the incident, Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) devised a strategy.

Their plan involved getting both Meg and the Prime Minister in the same room where she would admit her involvement in the bombing.

She revealed that the scheme was executed when it seemed Scotland was about to secede from the union. Following the attack, Trowbridge was expected to demonstrate leadership and reunite them.

The plan wasn’t supposed to result in any casualties, but 43 people were killed. It quickly became evident that Trowbridge was oblivious to this when he started to confront Roylin.

However, the orders came from beyond Roylin as it was actually Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) who was behind it all without President Rayburn’s (Michael McKean) knowledge.

When the Vice President discovered that Kate knew, she explained that she thought it was the right decision in order to foster British unity and put an end to Scotland’s growing movement for independence.

Kate understood Penn’s reasoning initially but later decided she should no longer be in power and declared that she wanted to be vice president.

To try and help her get the job, Kate asked Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) to tell the secretary of state about Penn’s involvement in the bombing but instead chose to speak to President Rayburn directly.

It later came out when Hal tried to explain what happened to Kate that the president got very upset after hearing the truth, so much so that he died.

At the point of finding out, Secret Service agents surrounded Penn and it was quickly realised that she was now the new President of the United States.

The Diplomat is available to watch on Netflix.
