BECKLEY, W.Va. – Former Raleigh County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Tom Truman will complete the remainder of Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney Ben Hatfield’s term, which expires on Dec. 31.
Members of the Raleigh County Commission made short work of the decision in a special meeting this morning, unanimously choosing Truman, noting that he has 30 years of experience in the court system.
“It is an honor to be asked to serve,” Truman said in a statement. “I truly was the happiest retiree I knew, but I think I can help guide the prosecutor’s office. I served under 4 elected prosecutors and each one of them brought something different to the office. I hope to bring that experience as well as the experience of being a long time assistant to serve the people of Raleigh County.”
Truman retired in February 2022 and was named acting prosecutor when Hatfield resigned the position on Oct. 25.
Hatfield was the subject of ongoing investigations into alleged inappropriate conduct at work. The Commission had also started the process to remove him from office.
The Commission will have to make another appointment to the prosecuting attorney’s position in January if Hatfield, a Republican, wins Tuesday’s election. His name is the only one on the ballot since no other political party chose a candidate. In his letter of resignation, Hatfield said he will not accept the position if he wins.
However, a write-in candidate, Beckley attorney Jordan Adkins, has been actively campaigning and would take the position if he beats Hatfield.
If not, the Commission’s January appointment will be for the full four-year term since state Code does not call for a special election for this office.
In a formality, the Commission also voted to accept Hatfield’s letter of resignation.
