Two people were left injured after a blaze ripped through a Scots block of flats. The drama unfolded in Edinburgh just after 1pm this afternoon.

Firefighters raced to tackle the blaze, at a property in the city’s Albert Street, after the alarm was raised. The blaze took hold within a first floor property and left the pair needing treatment.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known, and Edinburgh Live reports that the Scottish Ambulance Service was also deployed with two people treated by paramedics.

Four appliances, with up to 20 firefighters and one height appliance were sent to the scene, and pictures showing the emergency response have been seen by Edinburgh Live.

The images show firefighters responding to the blaze as smoke billows into the sky from a flat window, and firefighters are still on the scene.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue said: “We were alerted at 1.25pm on Friday, November 1 to reports of a flat on fire at Albert Street, Edinburgh.

Operations Control mobilised four fire appliances and one height vehicle to the scene where firefighters are working to extinguish a fire affecting a first floor flat within a five-storey building.

“Two casualties were in the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.” One resident living within the building said there was “smoke in the stairwell”.

He added: “We don’t know the cause. The fire brigade came in to try and assess what had caused it. I’ve been stood here for about two hours now.” The Scottish Ambulance Service has been approached for comment.
