The Government has revealed plans to ban disposable vapes in England and Wales from June 1, 2025. This move is designed to safeguard children’s health and minimise environmental harm.

Following this announcement, a survey was conducted by Haypp among UK vape users. The findings showed that 12% of disposable vape users would revert to smoking cigarettes if the ban were implemented.

Cancer Research UK states that numerous studies indicate vaping is significantly less harmful than smoking due to the absence of cancer-causing tobacco in e-cigarettes. However, vaping is not risk-free and can lead to serious health issues, including potentially fatal lung injuries.

So, what alternatives will vape users have when the ban takes effect?

Markus Lindblad, an expert in nicotine retailing, answers the most frequently asked questions about the UK’s impending disposable vape ban. When asked about the timeline for the ban, Markus said: “Disposable vapes are set to be banned in summer 2025, with the UK government giving suppliers a deadline of 1st June 2025 to get rid of all stock across England.”, reports Lancs Live.

On the topic of alternatives, he explained: “Whether it’s nicotine pouches, reusable pod devices, or gum, there are plenty of alternatives to disposable vapes available on the market. It’s really important people do their research and find what alternative is best for them,”.

“E-liquids and pods are set to be the future of vapes in terms of both future regulation and contributing to a more sustainable world. They will definitely be key in making sure that today’s disposable vape users do not go back to more harmful cigarettes or turn to the growing illicit market of disposable vapes.”

Following the ban, only disposable vapes will be prohibited. Adult vapers will still have access to refillable and reusable vapes, according to Markus.

The vaping expert explained the reasons behind the ban: “The UK government has cited two key reasons for the ban. Firstly, given the huge impact they have on the environment as disposable vapes are not recycled properly, leading to 1.3 million single-use vapes being binned every week. Secondly, the ban of disposables will also hopefully prevent young people from accessing them.”

While there have been concerns raised about flavoured vapes by various authorities, Markus says the UK government has not yet confirmed whether they will be banning all flavoured vapes. In the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, they do intend to address the rise in youth vaping, which could potentially mean restricting vape flavours that appeal to children.

However, at this moment in time, nothing has been confirmed.

Markus stated: “Like anything with a battery, vapes should be recycled. This is true of single-use vapes and rechargeable vapes. There are specific ways to recycle vapes, due to the battery inside. It is always good to check how to dispose of vapes in your local area to find the correct methods and recycling options near you.”
