Bonfire night is fast approaching with many pet owners wondering what they can do to comfort their distressed pets throughout the loud firework displays.

Dogs in particular often suffer from anxiety through Guy Fawkes night with a sleep expert from SilentNight sharing some reassuring tips about how you can keep your pooch calm and comforted on November 5.

Plan Ahead

“Planning ahead will help to reduce any fears ahead of the evening. Ensure to walk your dog before it goes dark to avoid needing to go outside during the fireworks.

“It is also a good idea to help them burn as much energy as possible in the day to tire them out for the evening. Making their usual walk a little longer and factoring in lots of play time should burn some energy.”

Create A Calming Environment

“To help ease anxious dogs, create a calming environment for them to relax in, surrounding them with their favourite toys, blankets and treats.

“The Silentnight Calming Donut Pet Bed is ideal for keeping your dog close and comfortable as can be on Bonfire Night. It features a long plush fabric which replicates the nesting environment which helps your pet to feel calm and reduces unease.”

Soundproof your home

“Plan ahead before the evening draws close by minimising as much noise as you can coming into your home. Ensure to shut all windows and doors and curtains, reducing the sounds and light coming in.

“Turning the TV on will help to cover any additional noise, if your dog is responsive to peaceful sounds, play some calming music for them if they are anxious.”

Offer reassurance

“Just like humans, dogs also need plenty of love and affection, and sometimes this can be the best aid to anxiety. Keep them close by and offer plenty of reassurance and attention when they seem uncomfortable.
