Mercer Co. Oktoberfest fundraiser returns with new location

BLUEFIELD, W. Va. -On Saturday, the Mercer Co. Oktoberfest returned, an event that has been held annually for around a decade. But this event had a purpose beyond food and drinks: raising money for aesthetic improvements in Bluefield.

The day consisted of food from David’s Downtown, live music, and, of course, beer with unlimited tastings. Due to the recent storm, the event was pushed back from its original date in late September, with a new location as well: the Bluefield arts center. This is all to benefit the Bluefield Beautification Commission, a group of volunteers who work on various projects in the area.

“It’s important to the commission and to the community because this is how we raise funds to purchase the flowers that are downtown every summer, we purchase benches, trash receptacles, trees; we just have a lot of things that we buy to enhance the city,” says Gail Satterfield, a chairman of the Bluefield Beautification Commission.

The Commission is planning to hold this event again in the future, with hopes to hold it in the new green space in the center of downtown Bluefield West Virginia.
