Durie’s Amateur Boxing Club enjoyed success in the final round of the Scottish Development Championship over the weekend as two of their boxers took home medals.
Held over the last two weeks, the club had six boxers in action across the fortnight and in the latest round it was the turn of Kai Ryan and Ava Short to compete.
Carmyle lad Kai was in against Barn ABC boxer Kayden Docherty in his final. The Barn boxer was a taller fighter who started off slow, but he caught Kai with a couple of back hands, landing flush on the face of the 13-year-old Durie’s boxer, busting his nose and leaving him disorientated coming back to the corner at the end of the first round.
Head coach Archie had one look at his boxer and waved to the referee that he was calling it off.
Archie said: “It’s the Development Championships and he would have gained nothing going back out for another round, so the bout was stopped the start of the second round in favour of the Barn BC boxer, with Kai taking silver.”
The very next bout saw 13-year-old Ava from Lesmahagow take her first Scottish title with a strong display of long, straight punching against a shorter game opponent in Jodie McLean from Doghouse Boxing Club in Stirling.
Straight from the first bell, Ava went at her opponent, forcing a standing 8 count in the first, then in the second the referee called a halt to proceedings, with the win going to the Durie’s boxer.
Archie added: “I was delighted with our girl Ava.
“She’s a very strong puncher and I’m sure you are going to be seeing Ava winning loads of titles with the style she has got.
“Overall, over the two weekends we had six boxers in action and they won three silver medals and one gold, so it’s a big well done to the team.”
