The annual theme competition took place at the latest meeting of Motherwell Photographic Society.
This is always a fun night giving the club members the opportunity to become judges for the evening as the members score each other’s images.
The themes this year were “Abstract” for the digital images and ”Reflections” for the prints. There was a great selection of images and prints for the members to choose from.
After the member voting took place there was a three-way tie for first place in the print section.
After a second round of voting Rodger Shearer’s print “The Old Master” was awarded first place. “Who’s Looking at You?” by Douglas McEwen was second and “Psychedelic Colours” by Margaret Dewar was third. Rodger will select the theme for the print section of next year’s competition.
After counting the points awarded in the digital image section there was a four-way tie for first place. After a further round of voting the winner was Dominic Smith with his image called “Fluid Motion”. “Show me the Money” by Linda Greenhill was second.
In joint third place was “Tree in Arran” by Ashley Hanlon and “The Bluebell Woods” by Linda Greenhill. Dominic will select the theme for the digital image section of next year’s theme competition.
The overall winner was Rodger Shearer whose print “The Old Master” received the highest score on the night. Rodger will be presented with the Fergus Smith Memorial Trophy at the annual awards evening in April.
The club members also viewed the Glasgow District Photographic Union’s 2024 Image Portfolio colour section.
The portfolio consisted of the top twenty five highest scoring images in a competition open to all GDPU camera clubs. “Breaking the Mould” by club member William Graham was awarded a maximum 20 out of 20 by the judge.
At the next meeting on Thursday, November 7, the guest will be Gavin Forrest from Carluke Camera Club who will be the judge for the second digital image competition of the season.
Motherwell Photographic Society meets on a Thursday evening at 7.30pm in Holytown Community Centre. As always, anyone with an interest in photography, no matter your level, is welcome to attend.
The annual membership fee is £30. There is a £2 weekly fee payable for all meetings in the community centre, which includes tea, coffee and biscuits.
