Josh Taylor has been advised to call it quits on his boxing career to avoid the risk of becoming a ‘joke fighter.’
The former undisputed super-lightweight champion of the world has suffered back to back defeats to Jack Catterall last April and Teofimo Lopez in July 2023, and is currently without a promoter after his contract with US giants Top Rank expired. The 33-year-old has previously hinted that he could move up a weight class and campaign at welterweight but it remains to be seen when he will make his return to the ring.
And in the opinion of his former rival Ohara Davies – who Taylor knocked out in seven rounds back in 2017 – the Edinburgh boxer and 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist should seriously be considering his future in the sport. Speaking to BoxingScene, Davies said: “Taylor is not the same fighter he was. I think he needs to sit down and ask himself, ‘Is it worth it? Am I going to further tarnish my reputation?’
“Because that has been tarnished after the Catterall fights and the Teofimo Lopez fight. The Taylor that we all know was a fierce fighter; walked through anyone, beat anyone, unbeaten, undefeated, undisputed.
“Now a lot of people are looking at him like a joke, like he’s a joke fighter, like he’s a walkover.”
