BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – West Virginia Governor Jim Justice was on hand in Mercer County on Monday to announce a company has been awarded the bid to construct the next section of the King Coal Highway.
Justice announced that the Kanawha Stone Company won the bid to complete the 2.5 mile section of the highway that will from from Airport Road to Littlesburg Road. The cost to complete the stretch of the roadway is $57 million.
Construction is expected to start next year and officials with the West Virginia Division of Highways say the stretch of roadway is expected to take two years to complete.
“The King Coal Highway and the Coalfields Expressway, they will bring life to southern West Virginia like you can’t imagine,” said Justice. They are so important to southern West Virginia, where I grew up.”
The King Coal Highway when completed is expected to run 95 miles through West Virginia. It will run through Mercer, McDowell, Wyoming, Mingo and Wayne Counties.
