PRINCETON, W. Va. -While voting for the general election starts tomorrow, many have already cast their ballots through early voting.
Many of the counties in our coverage area say their polling places have seen a greater than average turnout, with counties like Monroe and Summers reporting that this election broke voting records.
While Mercer County didn’t break its record, it did come closer than most years.
The Mercer County Clerk, Verlin Moye, says, traditionally, Mercer County has a 35% percent voter turnout. This year, however, is looking at 61-62% percent, with around 11,231 ballots cast.
“People are just really, you know, they’re really interested in this presidential election. There’s a lot of controversy on both sides, and it’s just a heated race, and there’s a lot of other races state-wide that are… very important and local races that are important and are to be decided…” says Moye.
This is coming relatively close to the record set back in 2020, around two hundred votes below that mark. We asked Moye how they’re handling this increased flow of early voting traffic.
“Well, we… try to just remain calm to start with and then we have traffic control, and, you know, we have different duties and responsibilities for everyone involved, so there’s a lot of moving parts with the election, and we just take it one step at a time but always forward,” say Moye.
Moye encourages those waiting to vote until election day to cast their ballots, calling this a chance to be a part of history.
He also wants to remind Mercer County voters that they will not be voting at the Mercer County courthouse… but in their particular precinct. If you have questions about where you need to go, you can go to mercervotes.com for more information.
