Presidential candidate Kamala Harris was warned not to Google Doug Emhoff before their first date over 10 years ago in 2013.

Harris, who currently serves as Vice President has been married to Emhoff for over 10 years. However, it wasn’t long before their marriage in 2014 that they first met when they were introduced via a mutual friend.

In her book ‘The Truths We Hold’, Harris recalls that she was told not to Google the famous lawyer. She said she was instructed by her friend: “His name is Doug Emhoff, but promise me you won’t Google him. Don’t overthink it. Just meet him.”

Harris added that she was told by her friend that Emhoff was already in possession of her number and that he would be the one to reach out rather than the other way around.

Describing the text he sent as “awkward” Harris explained they texted before agreeing to a phone conversation the next day. Today reported that the next day Emhoff left a lengthy voicemail. Despite describing the message as “a little rambling” Harris admitted that it was something she decided to keep.

Harris added that after the voicemail and initial messages she was interested in learning about Emhoff. In contrast, he reportedly felt he had completely scuppered his chances of success with the future Vice President and Presidential candidate.

Harris wrote: “The voicemail, which I still have saved to this day, was long and a little rambling. He sounded like a nice guy, though, and I was intrigued to learn more. Doug, on the other hand, was pretty sure that he had ruined his chances. The way he tells it, he thought his voicemail had been disastrous and that he’d likely never hear from me again.”

Following their first date, Harris and Emhoff would continue to see each other and as their relationship developed, Harris was introduced to Emhoff’s children Ella and Cole who he had had with a previous partner.

Speaking about Emhoff’s two children, who he had from a previous marriage, Harris wrote about how they had welcomed her into the family despite her caution about wanting to be respectful towards the pair.

Describing the pair, Harris wrote warmly: “They are brilliant, talented, funny kids who have grown to be remarkable adults. I was already hooked on Doug, but I believe it was Cole and Ella who reeled me in.”

In 2014, Emhoff proposed to Harris as they were packing for a trip to Italy. The same year the duo married in a ceremony presided over by Harris’ younger sister Maya with Emhoff’s children Cole and Ella choosing not to call Harris their stepmom and instead came up with the moniker “Momala”.
