US citizen Loren Schauers has had his life completely transformed after a tragic accident, yet five years on, he’s set on making a significant change that could extend and enhance his life.
At the tender age of 18, Loren encountered a catastrophic event while operating a forklift truck on a bridge. Miraculously surviving being severed in half, Loren’s journey has been anything but simple.
He and his wife Sabia Reiche have launched a YouTube channel to track his rehabilitation journey, where hes candidly spoken about his aspirations for a major lifestyle adjustment to better his chances at living longer.
Surviving such an appalling ordeal has not been easy, and Loren, fully aware of the precariousness of his own survival, has expressed his desire to make his existence more bearable. In response to viewers questioning ‘what would you change about yourself,’ Loren confided in his followers that he’s introducing exercise equipment to aid in his ‘physical therapy’ and has the ambition to stop smoking.
Loren articulated his wishes to his audience: “I’d like to quit my smoking habit, obviously, because I’m mainly all lungs now,” adding, “That way I could prolong my life longer than it’s already been shortened to, given my situation. I wish I could quit.”, reports the Mirror.
Loren has expressed his aspirations not only for a healthier life but also to improve as a person, emphasising the importance of how he interacts with others. Speaking about his life expectancy, Loren and Sabia have been candid, with Sabia noting the uncertainty surrounding his condition: “That one is so touch and go, there’s no, you know, for sure. In the recorded cases, I believe the average was about 11 years and the record holder was at about 24 years. But none of them were in the same situation as Loren.”
She added, “The closest one to Loren’s situation, age, health, all of that was the one who lived about 24 years. So, if we go off of that, you know, we are hoping Loren has, you know, 40-plus years left with us. So, that one is really hard to answer because his case is so rare. Because his case is so rare, it’s hard to pinpoint.”
Reflecting on the five years since his accident, Loren reports progress in managing his pain thanks to rehabilitation methods from his doctors, yet acknowledges the profound changes in daily life: “My pain is definitely more under control now, my health is a little wild and out of control,” he commented. “Me and Sabia are doing great. We don’t get out much. We went to Lollapalooza in Chicago and had a great time obviously. She’s reading her books, I’m watching my TV shows…we’re just existing.”
