WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – As Election Day got underway in the nation’s capital, both locals and visitors near the White House said they were feeling mixed emotions about the big day.
“I’m feeling very nervous,” said Emily Garrison, who was visiting from New York.
“The stakes to me seemed very high. It was very kind of emotional,” said Ellen Komesarook, a local resident.
The chaotic election season has been full of twists and turns and now many are anxiously waiting to see who the country elects to lead the nation.
“It is sort of a very sensitive moment. Nobody knows what’s happening tonight,” said Rudy, a tourist from Germany who came to Washington for the election.
There was certainly excitement among some voters like Sonja Breda, who is supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris.
“I mean, this is a really historic, candidacy, and I’m really excited to see her win tonight. The stakes couldn’t be higher. I think for women, the environment on so many different issues,” she said.
Rudy said he was curious to see who America elects because the decision will impact his home country.
“I came especially for the election because it’s also in the election, which affects us. It’s Europe, it’s Germany, it’s the world, right? It’s Ukraine. You have all the major topics which this election will sort of, turn into one or the other direction,” he said.
Komesarook said thinks the country is ready to move ahead, past the division that she said is being caused by former President Donald Trump.
“I think eventually once this era is over, I keep thinking we will be okay. I just think we have to turn this corner, We’ve really got to turn. If we don’t turn this corner then we got no hope, I think. I mean, that’s my depression. If she if she doesn’t win,” she said.
