Day of the Jackal star Ursula Corbero has confessed it took a while to fall in love with her role as Nuria in the upcoming spy drama.

A reimagining of the 1973 film, based on the 1971 novel by Frederick Forsyth, the 10-part Sky series follows a cold-blooded contract killer known only as the Jackal, portrayed by Eddie Redmayne.

As he becomes the target of intelligence officer Bianca (Lashana Lynch) following his latest political assassination, the series explores the Jackal’s enigmatic life and past.

Money Heist star Corbero plays the unsuspecting wife of the Jackal, Nuria, who enjoys a lavish lifestyle until she starts piecing together her husband’s secret identity.

“I kind of fell in love with this character,” she admitted at the show’s London premiere, reports the Mirror.

However, she added, “At the beginning I was a little bit confused because it felt like she was a little bit weak.

“But then, I remember, we started some rehearsals with Eddie and Brian and I just realised that was the arc of the character. It was very, very interesting for me.”

Known globally for her portrayal of Tokyo, the formidable thief in Netflix’s smash hit Spanish series Money Heist, Corbero acknowledges that adapting to her initially more subdued role in Day of the Jackal took some time. However, she soon discovered unexpected depths to Nuria.

“I’m more used to playing strong characters at the beginning, bad-ass characters,” she explained. “So it was very interesting to me to see how I would work on that arc.

“Nuria, she’s just not a very ambitious woman, she just wants a happy life. She doesn’t like trouble.

“But, by the time she knows that something is going on, she comes to understand that there is some strength in her she never had to show up. That’s very interesting.”

Evidently enjoying her role alongside the Fantastic Beasts lead, Corbero had no reservations playfully jabbing at her co-star during a Q&A with the cast.

On sharing scenes with Redmayne, she jestingly responded: “It was terrible. Like a nightmare. Still suffering. In silence.”

She then tossed a look towards Redmayne and added jovially: “I mean, I’ve been the whole day talking good things about you, that’s why I need to [put you down] a little bit. But he’s the best. He’s the best.

“He’s talented, he’s perfect. Perfection exists, it’s called Eddie Redmayne.”

Fans will delight in a hefty five new episodes releasing this Thursday, followed by weekly instalments for the rest of the season.

The Day of the Jackal premieres Thursday, November 7 on Sky and NOW.
