Motherwell and Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson will lead a Parliamentary debate to mark Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month – a global annual initiative which raises awareness of one of the least survivable common cancers.

Ms Adamson is a long-standing advocate for pancreatic cancer awareness including symptom awareness, the importance of early diagnosis and holistic support.

In 2017, she spearheaded the first Parliamentary debate on Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

This Thursday, Ms Adamson will host campaigners from Pancreatic Cancer UK for a photocall in the Scottish Parliament following First Minister’s Questions.

She said: “Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month is now a fixture on the Parliamentary calendar.

“Through the tireless efforts of campaigners, this uniquely aggressive form of cancer is now on the national agenda but we need to ensure that corresponds with improved outcomes for people afflicted by pancreatic cancer

“Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest common cancer; only one in four people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survive beyond a year.

“In the UK, overall survival for people with cancer has doubled in the past 50 years but pancreatic cancer survival rates have remained low.

“The people behind the stats – whose lives have been turned upside down – are counting on decision-makers to listen and to respond.

“Pancreatic cancer has long been defined by inequity and disproportionately poor outcomes. That is why I push this issue every November and why I will continue to do so year round.”

Some of the most common symptoms include back pain, indigestion, tummy pain and unexplained weight-loss or a loss of appetite. Anyone with jaundice – (a yellowing of the eyes or skin) – should immediately go to A&E.
