Netflix subscribers have been left feeling short-changed after the streaming service pulled the plug on another show, Scavengers Reign, casting it off after only a single season.
The fresh disappointment comes hot on the heels of several other abrupt cancellations this year that have already riled users. Recent casualties include popular titles like Kaos and Dead Boy Detectives, which were both dropped much to fans’ dismay.
Having first made waves during its debut on HBO’s Max in October 2023, Scavengers Reign earned critical praise before captivating a wider audience following its May release on Netflix.
The series, set against the backdrop of an exotic alien world, follows the perilous journey of space explorers battling through breathtaking landscapes and fending off formidable creatures.
Despite being embraced by critics and achieving the rare perfection of a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the show failed to gather enough viewers for Netflix or HBO to justify a new season, reports the Mirror.
Joe Bennett, the creator, took to Instagram to share the disheartening news, even teasing what would have been in store for the anticipated second instalment. The post quickly became a lightning rod for disgruntled fans expressing their disbelief and dissatisfaction.
Frustrated comments flooded in, with one fan venting, “You are KIDDING ME?!” and gushing about the show’s unparalleled appeal: “SR was the most beautiful and interesting thing on TV since maybe ever! It blows my mind that it wasn’t immediately given several more seasons.”
Another perplexed viewer contrasted Scavengers Reign’s fate with another Netflix project, pondering, “No season 2 of this yet [they’re] wanting a 5th season of Emily in Paris,” before querying, “You got a Patreon?”
Meanwhile, another chimed in with a lament about the industry’s focus on profit over quality, commenting, “This is such a waste, when profit plays against quality shows like this one.
“This is so important for me, I’ve never seen anything like it and we need more of it.”
Bennett’s announcement also sparked a wave of criticism towards Netflix on Reddit, with one user expressing their disappointment: “It’s really heartbreaking that such a uniquely beautiful show might not find a new home for season 2.”
Another added to the chorus of dismay, saying, “Too bad. One of the most imaginative – and horrifying – animated shows I had seen in years.”
A further fan shared their grief: “Life is unfair. Maybe my favourite season of television ever. Just a wonder.”
Calls have been made by other enthusiasts for competing streaming platforms such as Apple TV+ to pick up a second season, while some have pondered over the idea of a crowdfunded release on YouTube.

SkyThe creator’s recent comments may provide a glimmer of hope for followers of the Scavengers Reign series that its story might continue.
In a heartfelt message, he recounted the struggle to bring the show to life: “We’ve had to fight tooth and nail every step of the way to get this show made, starting all the way back in 2016 with the Scavengers short film to the release of the first season last year.”
He then offered a ray of hope to fans: “But this is not the end. There is more story to be told, we are ready to make another season, and we produced in-house at Green Street a teaser for what was going to come in the second season.
“Thanks again to everyone who watched and supported the show.”
Scavengers Reign is available to stream on Max in the US and Netflix in the UK.
