Despite some of the huge, blockbuster movies that have premiered on Netflix in the last few months, one particularly star-studded film has remained a fixture of the top 10 much longer than them all.

Animated flick Sing hit the big screen in 2016, following koala Buster Moon as he attempted to save his struggling theater by staging a singing competition – accidentally promising the winner a huge prize jackpot.

Matthew McConaughey led the hugely A-List cast, alongside Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Hudson, Rhea Perlman, Nick Offerman, Seth MacFarlane, Taron Egerton, Nick Kroll and Jennifer Saunders.

It raked in a whopping $634million at the global box office and led to a sequel in 2021.

Although it came out eight years ago, fans are clearly still obsessed with the goings-on at the bustling Moon Theater, and have continued watching it in their droves on Netflix.

In fact, it has been in the top 10 charts on the streaming platform for 15 weeks so far – and was viewed more than 5,400,000 times in the last seven days alone, with around 9,800,000 hours watched in total.

It was the sixth most watched film this week, and was only beaten by the acclaimed new thriller, Don’t Move, Anna Kendrick’s Woman of the Hour and Martha Stewart’s documentary – which she has publicly slated.

Sing definitely surpassed expectations when it premiered, meaning a second instalment was a no brainer for movie bosses.

The sequel focused on Buster and co debuting a new show at the Crystal Tower Theater, headlined by the reclusive Clay Calloway, who was voiced by actual Bono.

Sing 2 was also a success in cinemas, and spent 13 weeks inside the top 10 on Netflix – with a third movie on the way.

Details on Buster’s next adventure are thin, but director Garth Jennings, who was behind the first two instalments, previously confirmed he would not be involved.

Speaking to following the release of Sing 2, he told us: ‘I know for a fact that there is a lovely, lovely, lovely idea that we have for it. It would be amazing to make it.

‘I wouldn’t be the writer and director, though, if it does happen. I would take a step back and let other people carry it from here.

‘But we’ll just have to see what happens when it’s finished doing its run and whether the world… I don’t know what state the world’s going to be.

‘But I hope for the sake of artists here at the studio that we get to make it, because it would be pretty, pretty great.’
