The US has showcased its nuclear might just hours after Donald Trump’s victory as the newly elected president – by launching an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile from aboard the Airborne Launch Control System.
The American military has fired an unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base following Donald Trump’s election win, reports the Mirror.
This test launch is part of a routine operation intended to demonstrate the US’ nuclear deterrent is safe, secure, reliable and effective in deterring 21st-century threats.
Gen. Thomas A. Bussiere, commander, Air Force Global Strike Command said: “These tests are demonstrative of what Striker Airmen bring to the fight if called by the president. An airborne launch validates the survivability of our ICBMs, which serve as the strategic backstop of our nation’s defense and defense of allies and partners.”
