Victoria Beckham has opened up about her efforts to shield herself from the limelight after years of public scrutiny, and shared a poignant revelation about her son, Romeo.
The former Spice Girl, 50, and her husband David Beckham, 49, have spent their adult lives as two of the world’s most recognised celebrities – but Victoria confesses that her priorities have shifted since becoming a mother.
The couple faced significant public backlash following the 1998 World Cup, when David was red-carded for kicking Diego Simeone, resulting in England losing the match on penalties.
With a then 23-year-old David shouldering much of the blame, he admitted to falling into “clinical depression” in the aftermath.
This incident occurred just a year before David and Victoria tied the knot, inevitably putting a strain on their relationship. Reflecting on how they managed, Victoria told Harper’s Bazaar: “I mean, when it happened, David was the same age that Romeo is now.”
The doting mum heartbreakingly added: ” The devoted mum poignantly added: “But the thought of my Romeo having to go through it… I don’t know how he would handle that. I don’t know how anyone would handle that. But we didn’t have a choice.”
She further expressed her desire for a more “discreet” life for her and David’s children, Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 22, Cruz, 19, and Harper, 13.
Victoria Beckham opened up about the evolution of her relationship with husband David, reflecting on the days they basked in media attention. “You have to go through those times to make you, ultimately, who you are. We’ve kind of figured out how to be quite discreet, which is just how we want to conduct our lives right now.
“I suppose it used to be fun to go out and be chased by paparazzi walking down Bond Street – and you would dress knowing you were going to get that. I don’t want that any more.”
The power couple tied the knot in an astonishing ceremony in 1999 and continue to melt hearts nearly three decades later, reports the Mirror.
They recently paid homage to their love story by recreating their renowned purple wedding attire for their 25th anniversary. In a heartfelt conversation with Vogue Australia alongside Nicole Kidman, Victoria couldn’t help but express her deep adoration for her husband, the ex-football icon David Beckham, praising his sense of humour and affirming the strong bond they maintain.
Victoria confided: “I have a husband I very much am still in love with, possibly more than when we first met. We really laugh. And we really support each other in regards to our careers and passions.”
Reflecting her enduring affection, she shared a tender moment with her family: “I said to him last night – and the kids – after 25 years, I love your dad so much and I support him and continue to want him to be the best version of himself, and he does that for me. And it’s really important that the children see that.”
Victoria added: “Me and David can go away, just the two of us, and we laugh and we enjoy that time, and I think that’s so rare after so many years. It’s a pinch-me moment every day.”
The couple, who recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary, exchanged sweet messages to mark the occasion. Their enduring affection was on full display during their latest lavish yacht holiday, where they demonstrated that their love is still going strong.
