CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice defeated Democratic challenger Glenn Elliott for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Joe Manchin, the Associated Press reports Tuesday night.
According to unofficial results Tuesday night, Justice, a two-term West Virginia governor, defeated Elliott, the governor of Wheeling.
Elliott had been endorsed by Manchin.
Justice, a Republican who had widespread GOP support including from former President Donald Trump, is a coal mining entrepreneur who owns the Greenbrier resort.
In a release Tuesday night from White Sulphur Springs, Justice said, “From the bottom of my heart, thank you, West Virginia, thank you so much. It has been the honor of my life to serve as governor, and now, I will proudly represent you in the U.S. Senate. As a patriot and a conservative, I firmly believe in America’s greatness and am committed to putting America and West Virginia first in the U.S. Senate.”
