Former Rangers player Kyle Hutton has been arrested and charged after a woman died following a car crash in Rutherglen. The 33-year-old footballer is alleged to have been driving an orange Mitsubishi L200 pick-up vehicle when the horror accident took place off Farmeloan Road, close to the player’s home, on Saturday night.
Pedestrian Victoria Cairns, 40, from Glasgow, was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital by ambulance. She succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday, October 7.
Hutton has now been charged with road traffic offences. Police said enquiries remain ongoing as they issued a fresh appeal for witnesses who may be able to provide details of how the crash occurred. A report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
Sergeant Andrew Coutts said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman at this difficult time. They have asked that their privacy is respected.
“Our enquiries are ongoing and I would again ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or who may have dash-cam footage, and has not yet spoken to or provided this information to officers, to contact us as soon as possible.”
Hutton was expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court earlier this week but the Crown Office confirmed that he did not appear, although a case against him remains active.
A Crown Office spokesperson said: “The Procurator Fiscal received a report concerning a male aged 33 years in connection with an alleged incident on November 2, 2024. The accused was liberated from custody and did not appear in court. The case against the accused remains live and under consideration.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference 3542 of November 2, 2024. Hutton, who currently plays for a junior football club, was regarded as one of Scotland’s brightest new football stars when he broke into the Rangers team as a teenager.
Under Walter Smith, he made his debut in 2010 against Kilmarnock and helped the Ibrox club win the league and League Cup double. He started against Manchester United that season, and remained at Ibrox around when Rangers dropped down the divisions.
He made 72 appearances before he was released in 2015 and has since played for St Mirren, Dumbarton, East Kilbride, Queen of the South and Cowdenbeath.
Last November, Hutton appealed for help after his luxury Audi A6 was stolen from outside his house in Rutherglen by brazen thieves. He posted an appeal on X, saying: “Help. Car stolen last night between 8.30pm and 9.30pm this morning from Rutherglen.”
The post was quickly shared and the vehicle was recovered hours later. Hutton later updated: “Car has been found, thanks to everyone who shared it and to the people who got in contact with information that helped find it.”
In 2010, Hutton hit the headlines after he was kidnapped along with team-mate Kai Naismith. The pair had been visiting friends in Edinburgh when Paul Hislen threatened to kill them and bundled them into Huton’s Audi car.
The pair were later dumped and told: ‘We’re coming through to Glasgow and we’re killing your family.’ Edinburgh sheriff court heard the incident developed after Hislen, 24, tried to buy Hutton’s £17,000 Audi.
Hislen and co-accused Ryan Moore approached the pair, but when Hutton refused to sell the car, Hislen said: ‘Give us the car or get in the boot. If you don’t get in the back, I’m going to stab the f*** out of yous. I’m going to kill you.’”
Both attackers were jailed for the terrifying crime.
