FAYETTE CO, W.Va. – Officials with the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve said the fire has already covered more than 200 acres, with only 15 percent contained.
Initial reports indicate that the fire started around 4 p.m. Tuesday on Highland Mountain, about one-and-a-half miles north of Prince in Fayette County.
At this time, northerly winds are helping to spread the fire southward, but containment lines are in place.
Volunteer fire departments from Meadow Bridge, Danese, and Rainelle are assisting the National Park Service in containing the blaze.
There is still no report on how the fire started, and an investigation is ongoing.
