Forecasters have warned that temperatures are expected to plummet by around 9C in the coming week as an arctic blast grips the UK, with areas of Scotland to be hit.
After a period of unusual mild weather with late teen temperatures across the UK, a low pressure system is set to usher in much chillier conditions next week, with some of the coldest recorded snaps in areas of Scotland.
A shift in wind direction and speed means that significantly cooler air from the Arctic will make its presence felt. Dundee and Glasgow are recorded to hit one of the lowest in the country at a chilling 6C, whilst the village of Tarbet is expected to reach 5C.
The Met Office‘s long-range forecast for next week notes: “After a bright start, increasingly cloudy conditions are likely to develop by midweek, with patchy drizzle possible at times.
“Some fog is also possible, this slow to clear. Later next week, it looks like turning more unsettled for a time, with some rain or showers, particularly towards the east.”
It comes as November has been a fairly dry month, attributed largely to the persistent “anticyclonic gloom” which has resulted in extensive cloud cover, often low-lying with lingering fog patches.

The weather outlook is set to shift, with a drop in temperatures and an increased likelihood of rain across the UK in the coming week. Forecasts indicate that next Friday could be particularly damp.
The Met Office’s latest predictions state: “Winds will be mainly light for many parts early next week, but breezier conditions seem likely to develop from later next week… As we head into December, a more unsettled and mobile picture will probably develop across all parts.”
