Girl, 15, found dead in toilets at high school

A young girl has died suddenly at her school in the Scottish borders.

The unnamed 15-year-old was discovered in the toilets at Jedburgh Grammar School on Tuesday afternoon.

She was given CPR at the scene but was declared dead soon after ambulance crews arrived at 2.55pm.

All events, including parents’ evening, have been cancelled for the rest of the week and counsellors are on hand to support children.

Local councillor Scott Hamilton said: ‘My thoughts and prayers are with all those involved. I know the team both at the Campus and [Scottish Borders Council] will look to support all those affected.’

Councillor Lesley Munro wrote to parents saying: ‘Following the critical incident at the school on Tuesday, we want to confirm that supports will be in place on Wednesday to wrap around the school community at this difficult time.

‘These supports will include educational psychologists, trained officers, school staff, and partners who will be available for as long as needed.

‘If you have any concerns about your child or children, please do not hesitate to contact the school through their class or pastoral teacher, or in whatever way would be your normal method of communication.

‘As I’m sure you understand, it is not appropriate to continue with planned events for now, and parents’ evenings planned for this week will be rescheduled for a later date.’

Reivers Kickboxing Academy, held at the school, said classes have not been cancelled this week.

‘However, we totally understand if you do not wish to come to training this week and feel some family time is needed,’ the club said.

Jedburgh and Oxnam Parish added: ‘Our most sincere condolences to all at Jedburgh Grammar Campus Secondary at this time of deepest pain and loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.’

Police said her death was not suspicious and a report is being prepared for the procurator fiscal.
