Hamilton will fall silent this weekend to remember all those who served and gave their lives in both World Wars and in conflicts across the globe.
A Remembrance service will take place at the town’s cenotaph in Bothwell Park on Sunday afternoon, followed by an Armistice Day commemoration at the Victoria Cross memorial in the town centre on Monday morning, November 11.
Both will see poppy wreaths laid by local dignitaries, politicians and community organisations, and will include the poignant Last Post, a piper’s lament and two-minute silence.
The Remembrance Sunday service at the war memorial in Bothwell Park, taking place from 2.30pm, will be attended by South Lanarkshire provost Margaret Cooper and vice lord lieutenant of Lanarkshire Gavin Whitefield.
Military detachments and veterans will parade to and from the event, which will also be attended by local politicians and representatives of emergency services, uniformed organisations, community groups and local residents paying their respects.
It will be led be Rev Ross Blackman of Hamilton Old Parish Church and Rev Joanne Hood of St John’s Parish Church, while readings will be given by pupils from Hamilton Grammar.
Armistice Day falls the following day, Monday November 11, and a public service will take place at the Victoria Cross memorial at Castle Street in Hamilton at 10.40am.
It will include pausing for reflection during the national two-minute silence at 11am. Pupils of Hamilton College will give readings at Monday’s service, which will be attended by depute provost Bert Thomson.
He also attended last weekend’s annual Festival of Remembrance, held at Hamilton Town House.
