In any other country a good result is a, er, good thing, isn’t it?
But, oh no, Rangers battling to a 1-1 draw in an Athens cauldron against Olympiacos was anything but – in the eyes of our het-up regulars. They are adamant the only reason Philippe Clement and his players earned a draw was down to a fault with the Conference League winners. There’s no pleasing some people and Rangers heard all about it.
The man who specialises in winding up Rangers fans was back again to get us rocking. Gordon Ashley, Ayr, said: He said: “Jealous Rangers fans downplaying Celtic‘s fantastic Champions League form makes me laugh out loud, their humiliating record in the only competition that matters is now stuck in the record books for good after the change in format and the diddy competition they play in will see half their games played against clubs fielding reserve team players. We are the only show in town and they know it.”
Tam Williamson, Lanarkshire, said: “A shock result by Rangers but before the inmates take control of the asylum let’s be honest, that Greek outfit between them couldn’t beat eggs for an omelette. Big Phil will be hailed as a hero after this achievement and his future at Ibrox now looks secure which is great news for all us Celtic fans.”
Kenny Wilson, Moffat, said: “I knew the Rangers fans would be hurting after Celtic beat Leipzig but some of the comments on here are laughable. They are second in the German league but somehow not a good team. I remember their excitement after beating the mighty Malmo. But I’ll give credit and any team sitting third in the Premiership and getting a draw away to the fourth placed team in the Greek league should rightly be applauded”
James Brown, Glasgow, added: “I read some Rangers fans on here criticising Celtic fans for apparently getting carried away after Celtic’s great win against RB Leipzig. Will those same Rangers fans now apologise for their fans getting carried away in Greece after only drawing against a third rate team like Olympiacos? Who were truly awful.”
The banter crew were out in force as a familiar face was lampooned. Chris Lowe, Yoker , joked: “With yet another heroic away performance in Europe by Rangers making it six away games in a row undefeated I fear the £80 million rated trio of Dessers, Barron and Raskin won’t be around for long. Sorry for the fantasy valuations but I picked up caller Gordon Ashley’s glass by mistake last night”
Jimmy Murray, Edinburgh , said: “You must be joking. A strip to commemorate a stadium. Just in time for Christmas and a bargain at 75 quid. Surely Rangers fans are not going to fall for this. I’m no Rangers fan but I do think it’s an absolute disgrace when clubs unashamedly go out to rip off their own fans. Rangers should hang their heads in shame for this one.”
But not everyone was aboard the Celtic hype train. Alan Flett, emailed: “It’s all very well beating Leipzig at home with the crowd behind you but, can you win a two legged tie? Leipzig and Dortmund are weaker than they were two years ago, when both were comfortably beaten by Rangers. Celtic have a long way to go to gain any respect in Europe.
And the champions have been warned to be wary of Kilmarnock. Denis Bruce, Bishopbriggs, said: “Celtic could be brought back down to earth with a bump after their two stellar displays. Kilmarnock’s pitch on a dreich day could see the team without Kuhn, Carter-Vickers and Trusty, all three of them looking as though there could be fitness problems with them after the Leipzig game. That game will be a test of character and stamina.”
And a warning over pyro came next, with one caller insisting it’s never party time when the flares come out. Stephen Johnstone, Ardentinny, said: “The SFA need to fire a rocket at all clubs who fans home and away who recklessly firer of Pyrotechnics in the stands as the only flares one wants to see is the ones hanging in our wardrobe they will need to deducted points not fines the only way to stop these selfish bangers from putting fans players staff life’s in danger and also emergency services personal if called out to a football stadium and only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured.”
