A hotel with “great sea views” in Scotland’s ‘Town of the Year’ can currently be booked at a major discount.

Last month, the Daily Record reported that Oban had been named the country’s best town at the annual Scotland Loves Local Awards. The Argyll and Bute resort town was singled out for its community and local events.

At the moment, an overnight stay for two at the Great Western Hotel in Oban is available for £69 through voucher site Wowcher. With the standard cost being £108, this marks a discount of 36 per cent.

Situated along Oban’s waterfront, the Great Western Hotel is within walking distance of a range of amenities and attractions. Among the top local sights are the 18th-century Oban Distillery and the spectacular stone McCaig’s Tower.

Meanwhile, all of the rooms at the Great Western Hotel come with flatscreen televisions, hair dryers, desks, and en-suite bathrooms. The Wowcher deal also includes a full Scottish breakfast in the morning and a late 12pm checkout.

The hotel features an on-site restaurant for those looking to enjoy an evening meal, with a menu of traditional local favourites on offer. There is also a bar that serves up everything from beer and wine to cocktails.

The Great Western Hotel has earned mostly positive reviews from past visitors. It currently has an average rating of 3.5 out of five on Tripadvisor.

One recent guest shared: “Staff were helpful from the point of booking until departure. The building is showing signs of age and a bit sad in some places but the rooms were comfortable and spotlessly clean.

“The views of the bay were simply outstanding. I would stay here again.”

A second Tripadvisor user agreed: “We were a group of eight thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Clean and comfortable rooms great sea views.

“Compliments to the chef great to get properly cooked sausages. Being an old hotel adds to its character.

“Would return. Very popular hotel we were midweek and it was busy.”

On the other hand, a less positive review reads: “It’s a real shame that these once majestic hotels are slowly going down hill due to lack of investment, in reality they must have a huge overhead trying to keep them operating.

“Stayed for one night and must say I was reasonably impressed considering all the poor reviews. Staff were all friendly and attentive, room was dated but clean and tidy, breakfast was nice and well presented.”

If you are looking to spend a night or two in Scotland’s ‘Town of the Year’, but the Great Western Hotel doesn’t appeal, there are plenty of other accommodation options around Oban. These include the four-star Oban Bay Hotel and the boutique hotel No. 26 By The Sea.
